Relive the action after the controversial YouTuber Paul beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr – a former world champion and the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Sr

Jake Paul defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision on his return to the ring following his widely panned win over heavyweight legend Mike Tyson last November.

28-year-old Paul dominated the bulk of the fight but Chavez Jr offered little resistance across the first eight rounds. He had a solid gameplan to keep Chavez Jr at bay and work the body with wide right hooks which kept the Mexican at distance.

Chavez Jr later admitted he was surprised with Paul’s skills across the first four rounds but waited for him to tire in the latter stages. Chavez Jr landed more shots in the final two rounds and seemingly had Paul rocked before running out of time.

Paul extends his professional record to 12 wins and one defeat from 13 fights and wants to pursue a world title shot going forward though that goal is still a long way off.

Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr live: Welcome!

Tonight, Jake Paul returns to the boxing ring to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr – a former world champion and the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Sr.

Paul last fought in November, outpointing heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in a bout that was widely panned, with the YouTuber later admitting that he held back against the 58-year-old.

Now, 28-year-old Paul takes on another former world champion in Chavez Jr, who held the WBC middleweight title from 2010 until 2012.

Chavez Jr has pedigree, therefore, also factoring that his father is boxing royalty, yet the 39-year-old has not impressed in recent times.

In 2021, he was outpointed by UFC icon Anderson Silva, who was 46 at the time, and his last outing was a decision win against another UFC alum, Uriah Hall. That fight took place last July, two-and-a-half years after his previous contest.

After Mike Tyson travesty, Jake Paul faces his first serious boxing match

This pairing with Chavez Jr, 39, marks somewhat of a return to form for Paul in terms of his matchmaking.

While some observers clung to the hope that Tyson could be a fraction of the “Baddest Man on the Planet” that he once was, that this would be enough to knock out Paul, it was never going to happen.

The real question surrounding the bout was whether the younger American, who has committed himself to the sport more than the average person realises, would actually try to stop Tyson. Paul did not try, which was simultaneously a merciful act and the biggest issue with that carnivalesque contest: its lack of authenticity.

It was never a balanced match-up, but people believed it was, because they wished it to be. In contrast, Paul’s previous contests were at least closer to ticking that box, even if they almost always leaned in his favour when put under the microscope.

Paul’s sole loss, against Tommy Fury, proved the exception. It was a serious test for Paul, although it was not necessarily a serious match-up more generally, given Paul’s background and the fact that Fury is not the boxer his family wants you to think he is.

Still, another serious test may wait this evening.

Inside Paul’s training: Double days, ‘brutal’ track sessions and 1,000-rep workouts

Paul’s journey to professional boxing is far from conventional. While his pedigree in the sport is regularly debated online, his work ethic rarely is.

His ambitions are equally unambiguous, with the 28-year-old telling DAZN: “The main goal now is to get a belt, that’s the only thing I haven’t accomplished in the sport of boxing. I’ve won knockout of the year, [I won the] most-viewed fight ever, so for me the only thing that’s left is to become world champion.”

To achieve this, Paul’s strength and conditioning coach and Let’s Build Champions author Larry Wade has been subjecting the star to an intense pre-fight training camp containing double training days, ‘brutal’ track sessions and 1,000-rep abs workouts.

This is what a week in the life of a YouTuber-turned-professional boxer with world-topping aspirations looks like:

The secret recovery tool helping Chavez Jr prepare for Paul clash

Chavez Jr has been less forthcoming than Paul with details about his preparations.

There is one clip from last month showing Chavez Jr hitting a circuit of hurdles, sled pushes, Versaclimber intervals, slam ball chest throws and battle ropes, dressed in head-to-toe sweats. But beyond this, training insights have been few and far between.

A recent video with DAZN captures him working through some footwork techniques, with coach Jorge Capetillo revealing his “conditioning is very well [sic] – he’s been doing between 10 and 12 rounds [in training] so I feel comfortable he will put in a great performance”. After this, Chavez Jr heads home to put his feet up on the sofa while watching TV with his team.

As he does this, he is zipped into a pair of inflating boots that rise up to his hips. So what are these odd-looking contraptions, and how could they help Chavez Jr’s training efforts?

Zurdo Ramirez and Jai Opetaia are on a cruiserweight collision course

If Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez can retain his cruiserweight titles against Yuniel Dorticos tonight, he may finally set up a unification bout with Jai Opetaia.
